How Amber's App collects, uses, protects and lets you delete your family's information - written for parents, in plain language.

Last updated: 1 July 2026

1. Overview

Amber's App ("Amber's App", "we", "us") is a family storytelling app that turns a child's short idea into a personalised, illustrated story and helps them learn to read it aloud. We built this service for children and the parents who care for them, so protecting your family's information is fundamental to how the product works.

Our core promise: a child's photo, voice and stories are private to your household, are never sold, are never used for advertising, and can be deleted by you at any time.

2. Who we are & the parent-first model

Amber's App is designed to be set up and controlled by an adult. A child never creates an account, never signs in independently, and never has a public profile. Children exist only as profiles inside a parent-controlled household account. This means a verified adult is always responsible for, and in control of, any child's information.

3. Children's privacy (COPPA & GDPR-K)

We comply with children's privacy laws including the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the "children's data" provisions of the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR-K), as well as applicable Australian privacy law.

  • We require an adult account and verifiable parental consent before any personal information about a child (such as a name, photo or voice recording) is collected or stored.
  • We collect only what is needed to create and read a child's stories - we practise data minimisation.
  • We do not condition a child's participation on disclosing more information than is reasonably necessary.
  • A parent can review, export or delete their child's information at any time, and can withdraw consent, which stops further collection.

4. What we collect

Information you provide

  • Parent account data: name, email address and authentication details for each adult in the household.
  • Child profile data: a first name or nickname and optional age band for each child profile.
  • Story inputs: the short idea your child types or speaks, and any optional photo used to create their character.
  • Voice input: when the child uses reading practice, speech is processed to check pronunciation.

Information collected automatically

  • Device & app data: device type, operating system, app version and a notification token, so we can deliver "story ready" alerts.
  • Diagnostic data: crash and performance logs to keep the app reliable.

We do not collect precise location, we do not build advertising profiles, and we do not allow third-party ad tracking.

5. How we use information

  • To generate personalised stories and illustrations from your child's idea.
  • To provide guided reading, narration and pronunciation feedback.
  • To maintain your shared household library and shared story credits.
  • To send notifications you have chosen to receive, to the correct parent.
  • To keep the service safe, filter unsafe content, prevent abuse and comply with law.

6. Photos & voice recordings

A photo, if you choose to add one, is used only to create a consistent, friendly caricature-style character of your child inside their stories. Voice input during reading practice is used only to check the spoken word against the expected word and give encouraging feedback.

  • Photos and recordings are stored privately and are visible only within your household account.
  • They are never sold, never used to train advertising systems, and never shown publicly.
  • You can delete a photo, a recording, a story or an entire child profile at any time.

7. AI processing

Creating a story and its illustrations involves automated (AI) processing of the idea and optional photo your child provides. Prompts pass through child-safety filters that block unsafe topics before a story is generated. We do not use your family's private stories, photos or voice to train third-party foundation models for unrelated purposes.

8. How information is shared

We share information only with service providers who help us run the app (for example cloud hosting, notification delivery and AI generation), strictly to perform those functions on our behalf and under confidentiality obligations. We may disclose information if required by law, or to protect the safety of a child or the public. We never sell personal information.

9. Data retention & deletion

  • Story content and profiles are kept while your household account is active so your library stays available.
  • You can delete individual stories, photos, recordings or a child profile at any time from the app.
  • When you delete the household account, we delete or irreversibly anonymise the associated personal information, except where we must retain limited records for legal, security or billing reasons. See Delete your account for step-by-step instructions.

10. Your rights & parental controls

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, delete or restrict the processing of personal information, and to withdraw consent. As the parent, you can exercise these rights for your child's information directly in the app, or by contacting us. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any right.

11. Security

We protect information with encryption in transit, access controls, and separate secure logins for each adult (no shared passwords). No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your family's data and to notify you and regulators of any material breach as required by law.

12. International transfers

We may process and store information in countries other than your own. Where we do, we use appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) to protect your information consistently with this policy.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves. If we make material changes, we will notify parents in the app or by email and update the "last updated" date above.
